Oversize/overweight transportation causes overwhelming damage to existing roads. Look no further than the 4th power law. Defined in the 50's following a multi-year government funded study of road damage, the 4th power law is still used today to help civil engineers quantify projected road damage.
Using the 4th power law, we can see measure the disproportionate road damage caused by heavy vehicles versus standard passenger cars. Keep in mind that this equation can take into account many different variables. For our purpose, we assume a standard 5-axle setup on a typical county road. The only variable we change is the weight of the truck to clearly display the exponential jump in road damage.
As shown below, one standard 80,000 lb truck causes as much damage as 5,900 cars.
Your state carefully curates routes to protect their roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, and you should too. They know that heavy loads cause more damage, and they know which of their roads are vulnerable. They know where they have size restrictions on and under bridges. They know all of this, and they created a policy and a system to allow them to govern where oversize/overweight vehicles travel.
